No return for the effort today at Royal Randwick as we see very few opportunities to escape consistently messy maps that largely went the way of the short favourites and provided little opportunity for the larger numbers to strut their stuff.

As we jump in the first with #6 Invictus Salute launching at $6.50/$7.37 it’s a very low speed pace right across most of the track as we maintain 4th right through the 400m and all the way to the end with a margin of 2.50L nowhere near enough to take down a strong run from #3 Fasika.

This is frustrating giving the strong zip up the outside which looked to be a chance to take full advantage of early traffic around #1 Booker, #3 Fasika and #7 Seasons who had all become glued together.

Coming into the 400m it was clear that we simply wouldn’t be getting the position that we needed despite clearly being able to put in the performance as we get stuck up on the rail.

One that may be taken up for review is Joshua Parr’s absolutely abysmal riding on #1 Booker just past the 300m with the mare wobbling back and forth across the track before bouncing straight into #6 Invictus Salute, with the only benefit for us here being the complete drop back and the opening up of the lane.

Unfortunately it was too little, too late as there was nothing left in the tank – and we think the interference was more costly than what it was worth – with #3 Fasika enjoying absolutely ever moment as the rest of the field runs into itself as #4 Resin cuts across the front and #2 I Am Excited swings comfortably into 2nd.

We think that there was plenty of opportunity for us to have a right go at it given what we saw in the early half of the run, but the positioning was costly, not to mention the back and forth on #1 Booker which took away any chance of the late run up the middle.

With our second bet of the day coming through in R6 we managed just an okay price around #1 Santa Ana Lane at $5.50/$5.96 as punters finally catch on to #2 Nature Strip being absolutely abysmal value at $2.00 as the price drifts out significantly to shoot through the $3.40 mark on the exchanges before settling at $3.10/$2.94.

This is unfortunate as it means that we lose out on the large price boost caused by the emotional investment of punters into the shortie – something that we absolutely love to exploit for our own benefit – and it’s made all the worse at BSP as a late jump sees a huge amount of liquidity automatically removed as bots cancel their positions.

Whilst we managed to trade down to around the $3.00 mark in-play, the race was absolutely dominated by the superior position put in by #2 Nature Strip as we get caught far back and to the side with the traffic caused by the mid-race pack stopping every other runner in their place as we settle in 6th at an abysmal 4.70L margin.

With the small sample size and track conditions causing issues across the day alongside a limited set of stakes, we won’t draw too many conclusions from performances made today.

Looking through a couple of the other races we made the correct choice to stay out with short priced favourites dominating the results but providing nowhere near the overlay nor the rated price that we would need to make it a bet.

WIth a bit of luck we’ll be back to a Good 4 the next time that Randwick rolls around, with the consistently bad weather a big stain on the NSW racing this early into the new season and a big handicap to picking any real semblance of strategy.
