No return for the effort as our day at the races turns into a bit of a rort with none of our value selections managing to display the form we know they’re capable of as a mixed set of results for other punters has the overall result looking a bit bland.

Heading into R1 and we get the bolt on #3 Non Paear settling ahead in 2nd with a fantastic position trailing slightly behind #1 Sam’s Image, whilst #9 Rock Tycoon not too far behind off the jump only managed to settle in the middle as the traction failed to come.

Passing the 600m is where we saw #3 Non Paear take the lead as #1 Sam’s Image began to twist his neck, clearly not happy with the ride as our $7.00 pick clears 2 lengths and started to look the clear value.

We failed to see #9 Rock Tycoon put in much of a battle as the mare settled in the 2nd group with just an average run across the track.

Things started to fall apart on the turn as #10 Alsvin makes some fantastic moves with Meech once again shows off her smartly timed dashes, and it’s here where we start to see the stitch as #1 Sam’s Image finally catches up to us just on the 200m mark, with absolutely zero room to move as we’re smooshed up against the rail and by then it’s game over.

With #10 Alsvin given the clearance and an absolute dash coming out from nowhere in #2 Viral with some very Winx-like stride, we’re pegged on the nose to finish 5th just 0.10L behind 4th with the official margin of 2.60L nowhere near where we should have been.

The lack of a smart choice around the late map is really what let us down here in a truly frustrating start as Meech once again showcases how the right move at the right time is really what we need.


Disappointingly we didn’t see any sort of run out of #9 Rock Tycoon, with a late plunge not helping out the value proposition either.

Moving into R2 and we managed a great price on #4 Radiant Success at an SP of $31.00 as the late exchange price at BSP drops a disappointing $25.20.

It’s a moot point as, whilst we had an okay jump, traffic played a large part and by the 900m mark we were already trapped in near the end of the field with little room to move as #9 Ocular and
#12 Oasis Girl both fight at the forefront of the pack.

The pace continued largely the same throughout, until we had a chance to knock through the outside and go for a jolt just outside the 200m mark but it was complete mayhem and far too late as #2 Star Surprise was too far ahead and took the run himself to finish just 0.40L off in 3rd whilst Stackhouse made the right choice to pull us up and save the energy as #8 Orienzel refused to put in the effort past the 300m mark.

Whilst we expected a bit of a long shot here, the loss of opportunity is clearly down to the lack of an attempt to get the late position right with #2 Star Surprise consistently taking the better stand in what should have been a strong late boost.

With #6 Overkill taking it and the price firming to $3.20 (from our early $3.40) we are still adamant that the 3 year old doesn’t line up for us with the margin against #10 Wings of Pastrami, #2 Star Surprise and #7 Heyington Station less than 1L between them.

From there we skipped out to R5 as we looked to scratch out something on #1 Epic Grey.

It was a quick drop in play as we absolutely failed to get the crucial jump right as what should have been smooth sailing for our 5 year old was like falling into an instant patch of mud.

It was incredibly disappointing too as our gelding put in a fantastic effort to make it up but just couldn’t get any traction with the field far and away and an additional block against the rail come the 700m mark.

By that point we know that there’s very little hope of recovering from two critical running errors as Yendall goes for a third by failing to take the available position on the outside to sit right up the bums of the pace leaders.

Of course #6 Bella Vella put in a stand out performance and it would’ve taken quite a bit to unseat the official margin of 2.50L, but we’re very disappointed to see a strong horse fail to put in much of an effort off the back of some very lackluster jockeying.

With our penultimate a single unit and our shot at another break-even result, we fail to see #7 Pippie put in a return in R7 despite a great jump that saw us sitting very well positioned 3rd coming into the 1000m mark.

The middle half of the race continued largely well for us as just a bit of the superglue effect seemed to kick in as we failed to stay up to the leaders – thinking perhaps that we’ll keep some in the kitty for the final burst.

Whilst we did have the call on the favourable position come 365m, the jetpack never turned on as we wasted the clear lane on the outside with #11 Loving Gaby stomping out ahead as #3 Gytrash was unable to overcome.

With the official margin 3.20L and a very easy run for the 3 year old filly, it’s unlikely that we would’ve seen a collect after the failure to capitalise on the run to the outside – locking in our stake loss for the day.

That leaves us with our final tiny position in R8 as #8 She’s On Time leaves us with a very sad state of affairs despite maintaining $81.00/$95.38 as our small unit play comes in dead last looking a far more tired horse than what we had seen previously.

Whilst we obviously calculated some trouble here and that is reflected in the staking, we expected a far better performance from the mare, and we always love a massive under-dog so it’s the most disappointing call for the day as the office favourite fails to fire.

The only bit of silver lining here is that it appears the entire field suffered a similar malfunction, with #3 Irithea failing to convert alongside #4 Princess Jenni who couldn’t catch a break.

It was also clear from the early pace that some very strong running from #5 Mamzelle Tess that this wasn’t going to be an easy race and it certainly put a few of the “sure things” to rest alongside our small outlay.

Definitely not a result that we’re super keen on, with quite a few of the strategic decisions made simply not lining up with where we think they should have gone, and mixed in with a couple of dead-end runs that seemed like they were stuck in quick-sand.

Contrast this to our usual “mixed” result which typically sees at least a handful of places and good goings at it, and we can definitely say that this meeting definitely didn’t go the way that we would have expected it.

Although we don’t usually run into these types of clean sweeps, it’s certainly annoying to have it happen at the same time as we see an opportunity to put on a couple of positions given the state of the racing and limited action lately.

We’ll obviously brush off the dust and have another go at it tomorrow morning on some more Metros, but it’s a shame that we’re essentially starting a step back rather than going in with a bit of cash to help the overall strategy.
